Adaptation B: Reflective Statement

After receiving today's feedback I relatively happy with what I presented, but disappointed with myself due to my lack of posting which I could have done and would have given some idea into what I was working on and to receive feedback. One major flaw of mine which has prevented me from fixing and improving certain parts of my characters was that I worked from home on this project and therefore were barring myself from getting any feedback or help, and combined with my lack of posting stopped me from receiving helpful feedback and technical help. This I intend to stop completely as soon as possible by posting frequently, with perhaps a weekly update at the very least to encourage me to start posting again, and coming into the university as much as possible.

Being too ambitious with the project again affected the quality of my characters and final piece, for if I had not attempted to make an animation for my final submission I would have been able to spend more time with the mariner and the albatross, and develop them to a higher standard for a turnaround. I will need to work faster in the future, plan ahead with a reasonable and realistic outcome.

One aspect of my project I am quite happy with is the albatross. I spent a majority of my time on this model, the texturing to make it look like it was part of an illustrative universe, and the rigging and animation to make it move and fly how an albatross would.

Overall I am quite proud of the piece which I have submitted but in the aspects where I have let myself down during this project I intend to post as much as possible in the future so that I can receive feedback and help over the next year.

Adaptation B: Mariner Designs

After my feedback from the interim crit I tried to develop the mariner's face design, as my previous drawings were too cartoony for the subject and the character who is very troubled and in a state of purgatory during the poem. I still attempted a simpler style but also slightly more realistic than my prior designs as to fit more to the etching/scratchboard illustrative style.

Adaptation B: Lady Life in Death Dress Designs

For Lady Life in Death's dress design, a ghostly woman who sails a ghost-like ship across the ocean with her ship mate Death, I originally decided to look at some 18th Century dresses which was the century in which the poem was written, and continued to tear apart and wear out these dresses to suit her more deathly and ghost-like character. I aim to develop these dresses so that they will fit to her description within the poem. Out of these designs I quite like 2, 3 and 5.

"Are those her ribs through which the Sun
Did peer, as through a grate?
And is that Woman all her crew?
Is that a DEATH? and are there two?
Is DEATH that woman's mate?

Her lips were red, her looks were free,
Her locks were yellow as gold:
Her skin was as white as leprosy,
The Nightmare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she,
Who thicks man's blood with cold."

Adaptation B: Lady Life in Death Influence Map

A collection of photography, art and images that could be used as inspiration for the character 'Lady Life in Death' within the poem 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. A common theme of these images is of 'wispy', ghostly imagery as well as decay of the skin and skeletons.

Did peer, as through a grate?
And is that Woman all her crew?
Is that a DEATH? and are there two?

Adaptation B: Style Influences

For a potential style influence for my Adaptation B, I was looking at some traditional illustrations of ink and pen from the era which the Rime of the Ancient Mariner was written, which was the late 1700s, after being introduced to 'The Kraken Rum' animations. During the 1700s many of the illustrations were very detailed black ink lines to create the image. Perhaps I could look more into this use of ink and pen in a rather traditional illustrative style for Adaptation B.

Adaptation B: Ancient Mariner

Rime of the Ancient Mariner
I would like to do character and set design for three characters from the Poem 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' of the ancient mariner, the albatross, and Lady Life in Death, as well as the set design of the ghost ship. For my final outcome I would like to make a still but with some animation of the three in the set, conveying the emotion of hopelessness, death, being cursed and being owned, from the extract of the poem, and a sort of feeling of purgatory.

Some of the style idea I would like to take inspiration from Over the Garden Wall, as it has a very sombre mood of purgatory, similar to the feeling of hopeless and somewhat purgatory within the extract.
