@Jordan: Fantastic Voyage: Art of Pages

I was unable to put my Art Of pages into form of a scribd document for today as it doesn't seem to be opening correctly on my computer but I will sort this out as soon as possible.

  1. Hi Danielle. Thanks for getting uploaded. A really nice start to an artbook. Just a few suggestions to keep in mind going forward.

Firstly, I think the concept art would all look stronger if it were the full page. If there are any gaps, then I'd suggest just putting them on a black background. The red lines compete too much with the artwork. So, just keep any of those finished pages as full page images with black backgrounds. Nice and simple. This would also apply to the character thumbnail pages you have.

I think a strong title font could also come into play. The font you are using at the moment feels a little bland and out of place. This font choice might take sometime to mull over, but try to find something that reflects the mood of your animation. Maybe try something like this - https://www.theleagueofmoveabletype.com/blackout - or perhaps a script font. Something that is more emotive of the dark, dungeon style work you are creating. And remember to be considerate about the size of the font. At the moment, the font is a little heavy. I always think font choices are difficult, so there is no immediate rush. Just start to mull over alternative solutions.

Lastly, I think the red line background could be dialed back / or removed and exchanged for a simpler background / stronger font choice. Personally, I think that background all too often pulls us away from the artwork itself. Let the artwork do the talking. The greenish background you have in you character pages could be full page, with a solid font choice and a few other small details. Something that doesn't detract from the work quite so much.

Lots of strong stuff going on. But my advice largely would be to simply let the work be more of the focus. That doesn't mean the artbook needs to become a generic thing that looks the same as everyone elses. But just be aware of book design taking over.
